Keene is located in the center of Cheshire County, New Hampshire.   The city’s entire area contains 37.6 square miles.  Keene lies fully within the Connecticut River watershed.

Keene was originally named Upper Ashuelot in 1735, and became part of New Hampshire in 1741 when the state separated from Massachusetts.  The town was renamed Keene in 1753, after Sir Benjamin Keene, who was an English minister to Spain, and a West Indies trader.  It was incorporated in 1874.  Keene’s population by 1880 was 6,784 residents.

Today Keene is a center for tourism, education and insurance.  Beautiful Victorian architecture can still be found in Keene today.   Keene is referred to as a college town and is home to Keene State College, whose students account for 25% of the town’s population.  Antioch University New England, a satellite campus of Franklin Pierce College and a branch of the New Hampshire Community Technical Colleges are also located in Keene.

Keene is home to the largest regional high school in Cheshire County, Keene High School, which serves approximately 1,850 students. The town is part of New Hampshire's School Administrative Unit 29 (SAU 29).

Over 20 churches and one synagogue are located in Keene.  Located in Keene’s downtown Central Square is the United Church of Christ, a landmark known as the White Church or the Church at the Head of the Square. Grace United Church is also located in the square and often referred to as the Brick Church.  Keene is home to two Roman Catholic churches, one Episcopal church and one Greek Orthodox church.  Keene is also home to the Horatio Colony House Museum, which is located on Main Street.  This federal style New England home is filled with original furnishing.

Keene hosts an annual Pumpkin Festival, which draws over 80,000 people from around the world.  The town also hosts the annual Keene Music Festival, a public event which is popular with local residents.

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Keene’s population consisted of 22,955 residents, 9,013 households and 5,118 families. The number of homes was 9,295, the average family size was 2.86 and the average household size was 2.27.
