The town of Tilton is located on the Winnipesaukee River in Belknap County, New Hampshire and includes the village of Lochmere. It is bounded in the east by Silver and Winnisquam lakes.

The town was originally called the Bridge Village and the Sanbornton Bridge, referring to the bridge that crossed the Winnipesaukee River. The town’s current name is in honor of Nathaniel Tilton who had established Dexter House, the town’s first hotel, as well as an iron foundry. Many statues in town have been donated by his grandson, Charles E. Tilton, who was the owner of the textile mills. Charles E. Tilton’s estate is now part of the Tilton School, and his former mansion, Tilton Hall, is now home to the Lucian Hunt Library. Located in the town of Northfield, the hilltop Memorial Arch was also donated by Charles E. Tilton.

U.S. Route 3, New Hampshire Route 11, New Hampshire Route 132, New Hampshire Route 140 and Interstate 93 cross through the town of Tilton. The town is considered to be the doorway to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Located at the intersection of the main routes that cross through the town, is a large retail and commercial district

Tilton contains a total of 12 square miles, consisting of 11.4 square miles of land, and 0.6 square miles of water. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, the town’s population was 3,477 people. This included 1,360 households, 875 families, 1,631 housing units, an average household size of 2.39 and an average family size of 2.89.
